A circle graph shows the favourite pets of 300 students, and the video finds how many chose a dog: 35% becomes the decimal 0.35, and 0.35 × 300 = 105 students. A quick check (35 in every 100, and 3 × 35 = 105) confirms the answer before the recap: write the percent as a decimal, then multiply by the total.

Transcript
What the lesson says
We asked 300 students to choose their favourite pet.
This circle graph shows each pet as a percent of the students.
The whole circle is all 300 students, which is 100 percent.
How many students chose a dog?
The dog sector shows 35 percent.
So we need to find 35 percent of 300.
Percent means out of 100, so 35 percent is 0.35.
Now multiply 0.35 by the total, 300.
0.35 times 300 is 105.
So 105 students chose a dog.
Check: 35 percent means 35 in every 100 students.
There are 3 hundreds in 300, and 3 times 35 is 105.
To turn a percent into a quantity, write it as a decimal and multiply by the total.
