Muddy water, salad dressing, milk and a spray can's mist build up into one labelled row: the soil in muddy water settles out (a suspension), shaken oil and vinegar form drops that float back up (an emulsion), milk's tiny fat drops stay spread out (an emulsion that is also a colloid), and spray mist is a colloid in a gas (an aerosol). A bracket then joins all four, ending on the recap that suspensions, emulsions and colloids are all heterogeneous mixtures.

Muddy water, salad dressing and milk are all mixtures, but what kind is each one?

Up close, none is the same all the way through, so each is a heterogeneous mixture.

What the lesson says

Muddy water, salad dressing and milk are all mixtures, but what kind is each one?

Up close, none is the same all the way through, so each is a heterogeneous mixture.

Muddy water has bits of solid soil spread through the water.

Left to stand, the bits sink and settle at the bottom.

A mixture whose solid bits settle out like this is a suspension.

This salad dressing is oil and vinegar, two liquids that do not mix.

Shaking breaks the oil into drops that spread through the vinegar.

Drops of one liquid spread through another liquid make an emulsion.

Left to stand, this dressing separates and the oil floats back up.

Milk has tiny drops of fat spread through water, so it is an emulsion too.

Its drops are so tiny that they stay spread out, so milk is also a colloid.

The mist from this spray can is tiny drops of liquid spread through air.

A colloid in a gas, like this mist, is called an aerosol.

Suspensions, emulsions and colloids are all heterogeneous mixtures.
