A plant and a rabbit stand in the middle of the screen while four basic needs appear around them, each with an arrow into the middle. These are food for energy (made from sunlight by the plant, eaten by the rabbit), water, air with oxygen and carbon dioxide, and space to live. Taking water away greys the plant and rabbit to show that every need matters, and the video ends on the recap "Living things need food, water, air and space".

What the lesson says

What does every living thing need to survive?

Plants and animals are both living things.

They look very different, but they share the same basic needs.

First, every living thing needs food, because food gives it energy.

Plants make their own food using sunlight, and animals get food by eating.

Second, they need water, because their bodies cannot work without it.

Third, they need gases from the air.

Both use oxygen, and plants also take in carbon dioxide to make food.

Fourth, they need space, a safe place to live and grow.

If even one of these needs is missing, a living thing cannot survive for long.

So living things need food, water, air and space to survive.
