A sunflower seed is planted in spring and soaks up rain, sends roots down and a sprout up, grows tall in the summer sun and opens a yellow flower, then fills with new seeds, and some of them fall to the ground in autumn. Four labelled cards build up one stage at a time, and a looping arrow from the new seeds back to the first seed shows that the life cycle goes round and round.

What the lesson says

How does a big sunflower grow?

In spring, we plant a sunflower seed.

The seed soaks up water and starts to grow.

First, little roots grow down into the soil.

Then a green sprout pushes up into the light.

In summer, the sun helps it grow tall.

Then a big yellow flower opens up.

The flower makes lots of new seeds.

In autumn, some seeds fall to the ground.

Each seed can grow a new sunflower.

It goes round and round: a life cycle.

Seed, sprout, flower, new seeds, and round again!
