A box of 3 yellow and 5 pink marbles shows a part to part ratio: yellow to pink is 3:5, and swapping the order gives 5:3. The video then counts the whole, 3 + 5 = 8, to show the part to whole ratio 3:8, the same as the fraction 3/8, and ends on the recap that a ratio compares part to part or part to whole.

Transcript

What the lesson says

What is a ratio, and what can it compare?

A box holds 3 yellow marbles and 5 pink marbles.

A ratio compares two amounts, and there are two kinds.

Part to part compares one group with the other group.

Yellow to pink is 3 to 5.

We write it with a colon, and read it as 3 to 5.

Order matters, so pink to yellow is 5 to 3.

The whole is all the marbles, and 3 plus 5 makes 8.

Part to whole compares one group with the whole.

Yellow to all the marbles is 3 to 8.

Part to whole works like a fraction, so three eighths of the marbles are yellow.

The same marbles give two different ratios, so always say what you are comparing.

A ratio compares a part with a part, or a part with the whole.
