A row of 3 red apples and 5 green apples is counted one apple at a time: 3 red, 5 green and 8 in all. The same picture then gives four facts, 3 + 5 = 8, 5 + 3 = 8, 8 − 5 = 3 and 8 − 3 = 5, as the green and then the red apples are taken away, and it ends on the recap "Adding and subtracting are related."

What the lesson says

Here are some red and green apples.

Count the red apples: 1, 2, 3. So there are 3 red apples.

Count the green apples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So there are 5 green apples.

Now count them all: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. So there are 8 apples in all.

3 red and 5 green make 8. So 3 plus 5 equals 8.

Now start with the 5 green apples. 5 plus 3 equals 8 too.

Now take away the 5 green apples.

Look, 3 red apples are left. So 8 minus 5 equals 3.

Put the 5 green apples back.

This time, take away the 3 red apples.

Look, 5 green apples are left. So 8 minus 3 equals 5.

These four facts all use 3, 5 and 8.

Adding and subtracting are related: one picture, four facts.
