A ten frame with two rows of five boxes is filled one counter at a time: six red counters, counted aloud (a full top row and one more), then four yellow ones in the empty boxes. The full frame shows that 6 and 4 make 10, and flipping one yellow counter to red shows that 7 and 3 make 10 too.

What the lesson says

How can we make ten on a ten frame?

This ten frame has ten empty boxes.

It has two rows of five boxes.

First, we put in some red counters.

One, two, three, four, five, six.

Five on top and one more make six.

Fill the empty boxes with yellow counters.

One, two, three, four.

So we used four yellow counters.

The frame is full, so it shows ten.

So six and four make ten.

Let's flip one yellow counter over to red.

Now seven and three make ten too.

Fill the frame with two colours to make ten.
