Five apples and three oranges are lined up in two rows with one orange under each apple, which shows that two apples have no match: there are more apples and fewer oranges, and counting checks that 5 is more than 3. Two more oranges fill the empty spaces (3 and 2 make 5), so now every apple has a match and the groups have the same number.

What the lesson says

Here are apples and oranges. Which group has more?

Let's line them up, side by side.

Let's match them, one apple with one orange.

These two apples have no match.

So there are more apples than oranges.

And there are fewer oranges than apples.

Let's count to check. One, two, three, four, five.

Now the oranges. One, two, three.

Yes, five is more than three.

Now let's add two more oranges.

Three oranges and two more make five.

Every apple has a match. Five and five, the same number!

Line them up to see more, fewer or the same.
