Red counters fill one ten frame as they are counted to ten, and four yellow counters go into a second frame, so ten and four more make 14. Counting on from ten checks the answer, and arrows show that the 1 in 14 is the full ten and the 4 is the four more.

What the lesson says

How can we show fourteen with counters?

Here are two ten frames. Each has ten boxes.

Fill the first frame, one counter at a time.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

The frame is full. That is one full ten.

Now put four more in the next frame.

One, two, three, four.

Ten and four more make fourteen.

Let's count on from ten to check.

Ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen.

The one shows one ten. The four shows four more.

So fourteen is one ten and four more.
