Making 10: Counters and Empty Spaces
- Grade 1
- Mathematics
- 1 min
- British Columbia
- BC1-MA-05
Red counters go into a ten frame one at a time and are counted to 7, then the 3 empty spaces are counted, and counting on from 7 to 10 shows that 7 and 3 make 10. One counter is then taken out, which leaves 6 counters and 4 empty spaces, and counting on to 10 again shows that counters and empty spaces always make 10.

What the lesson says
Let's find two numbers that make 10.
This ten frame has 10 spaces.
Put in red counters: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
So there are 7 red counters.
Now count the empty spaces: 1, 2, 3.
So there are 3 empty spaces.
Count on from 7: 8, 9, 10.
So 7 and 3 make 10 together.
Now take 1 red counter out.
That leaves 6 counters and 4 empty spaces.
Count on from 6: 7, 8, 9, 10.
So 6 and 4 make 10 too.
Counters and empty spaces always make 10.
