Five yellow ducks and three white ducks are counted, then swim together into one group of eight, showing that adding joins groups: 5 + 3 = 8. Then two ducks fly away and the six left are counted, showing that taking some away is subtracting: 8 − 2 = 6.

What the lesson says

Look at the yellow ducks on the pond.

Let's count the yellow ducks together. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

So there are 5 yellow ducks.

Now 3 white ducks swim over. 1, 2, 3.

Adding joins the two groups together.

How many ducks are there now? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Now there are 8 ducks on the pond. 5 plus 3 equals 8.

Then 2 of the 8 ducks fly away.

Subtracting takes 2 away from the 8.

How many ducks are left now? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Now there are 6 ducks on the pond. 8 minus 2 equals 6.

When we join groups, we add. When we take some away, we subtract.
