Fraction to Decimal: Divide the Top by the Bottom

The fraction bar turns into a division sign, so 3/4 becomes 3 ÷ 4, and the top and bottom numbers move into a long division where 3 is written as 3.00 and the decimal point goes straight above. Step by step, 4 goes into 30 seven times and into 20 five times, giving 3/4 = 0.75, which is checked by 0.75 × 4 = 3 before the recap: divide the top by the bottom.

What the lesson says
What is three quarters as a decimal? Let us find out.
The fraction bar means divide, so three quarters is the same as 3 divided by 4.
So we divide the top number, 3, by the bottom number, 4.
4 does not go into 3, so write 0 on top.
To keep going, write 3 with a decimal point and two zeros. Its value stays the same.
Put the decimal point in the answer straight above.
Now, how many times does 4 go into 30?
It goes 7 times, because 4 times 7 is 28, and 4 times 8 is 32, which is too big.
Subtract 28 from 30, and 2 is left.
Bring down the next 0 to make 20.
4 goes into 20 exactly 5 times, so write 5 on top.
20 minus 20 is 0, so nothing is left over.
So three quarters is equal to 0.75.
To check, multiply back: 0.75 times 4 is 3, the top number.
To change any fraction into a decimal, divide the top by the bottom.
