Rows of 6 red and 7 blue cubes are counted one at a time, and matching them in pairs shows that 7 is 6 and 1 more, so 6 + 7 = 6 + 6 + 1. Counting on shows double 6 is 12, and one more cube makes 13, so a near double is a double and one more.

What the lesson says

What is six plus seven? Let's find out!

Here are six red cubes in a row. One, two, three, four, five, six.

Here are seven blue cubes in a row. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.

The blue row has just one more cube.

Six plus seven is almost a double. It is a near double.

Seven is six plus one. So we have six plus six plus one.

Six plus six is a double, the same number twice.

Count on from six: seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve.

So six plus six is twelve.

Twelve and one more is thirteen.

So six plus seven is thirteen!

For a near double, use a double and one more.
