To find 13 − 8, the question is turned round into 8 + ? = 13, and a bunny hops along numbered stepping stones from 8 up to 13, saying each number as it lands. Counting the five hops gives the missing number, so 8 + 5 = 13 and 13 − 8 = 5.

What the lesson says
What is thirteen minus eight? Let's find out.
We can ask: eight plus what makes thirteen?
Here is a path of numbered stepping stones.
Our bunny starts on the stone with eight.
It will hop up to thirteen, then stop.
Now count up, one hop at a time.
Hop, nine. Hop, ten. Hop, eleven. Hop, twelve. Hop, thirteen.
Let's count the hops. One, two, three, four, five.
There are five hops, so eight plus five is thirteen.
That means thirteen minus eight is five.
We can subtract by counting up and counting the hops.
