Grade 7, Fractions, decimals and percents

Order of operations with decimals

Work out expressions with decimals in the right order, with and without brackets.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Two operations
Multiply and divide first, from left to right. Then add and subtract, from left to right.
Level 2: With brackets
Do the brackets first. Then multiply and divide, from left to right. Then add and subtract, from left to right.
Level 3: Three operations
Do the brackets first. Then multiply and divide, from left to right. Then add and subtract, from left to right.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Two operations

2.5 + 1.2 × 3 = 6.1

  1. Multiply before you add: 1.2 × 3 = 3.6.
  2. Then add: 2.5 + 3.6 = 6.1.
  3. Only × and ÷, or only + and −? Go from left to right: 7.2 ÷ 4 × 5 = 1.8 × 5 = 9.

Level 2: With brackets

(4.6 − 1.8) × 5 = 14

  1. Brackets first: 4.6 − 1.8 = 2.8.
  2. Then multiply: 2.8 × 5 = 14.

Level 3: Three operations

4.8 − 0.6 × 3 + 1.5 = 4.5

  1. Multiply first: 0.6 × 3 = 1.8. That leaves 4.8 − 1.8 + 1.5.
  2. Then go from left to right. Subtract first: 4.8 − 1.8 = 3.
  3. Then add: 3 + 1.5 = 4.5.
  4. When a line has brackets, work out the brackets before anything else.
