Grade 7, Fractions, decimals and percents

Add fractions

Add fractions with the same bottom number, then with related and unlike bottom numbers, and write the sum in lowest terms.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Same bottom number
Add. Write the answer in lowest terms; use a mixed number when it is more than 1.
Level 2: One bottom number is a multiple of the other
Add. Write the answer in lowest terms; use a mixed number when it is more than 1.
Level 3: Unlike bottom numbers to 12
Add. Write the answer in lowest terms; use a mixed number when it is more than 1.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Same bottom number

5/8 + 7/8 = 1 1/2

  1. Same bottom numbers: add the top numbers and keep the bottom. 5 + 7 = 12, so 5/8 + 7/8 = 12/8.
  2. Write it in lowest terms: 12/8 = 3/2.
  3. If the answer is more than 1, write it as a mixed number: 3/2 = 1 1/2.

Level 2: One bottom number is a multiple of the other

2/3 + 5/6 = 1 1/2

  1. Make the bottom numbers the same: 6 = 3 × 2, so multiply the top and the bottom of 2/3 by 2: 2/3 = 4/6.
  2. Add the tops, keep the bottom: 4/6 + 5/6 = 9/6.
  3. Write it in lowest terms, then as a mixed number when it is more than 1: 9/6 = 3/2 = 1 1/2.

Level 3: Unlike bottom numbers to 12

7/10 + 5/6 = 1 8/15

  1. Find the lowest common multiple of the bottom numbers: for 10 and 6 it is 30.
  2. Multiply the top and the bottom of 7/10 by 3 and of 5/6 by 5: 7/10 = 21/30 and 5/6 = 25/30.
  3. Add the tops, keep the bottom: 21/30 + 25/30 = 46/30.
  4. Write it in lowest terms, then as a mixed number when it is more than 1: 46/30 = 23/15 = 1 8/15.
