Grade 7, Fractions, decimals and percents

Divide decimals by long division

Long division of a decimal by a whole number from 2 to 9, with the decimal points lined up in the bracket.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Tenths, no extra zeros
Divide. Line up the decimal point in the answer with the point in the number you divide.
Level 2: Hundredths, no extra zeros
Divide. Line up the decimal point in the answer with the point in the number you divide.
Level 3: Write zeros to finish
Divide. When the digits run out, write zeros at the end of the decimal and keep dividing.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Tenths, no extra zeros

  1. Divide as with whole numbers. Put the point in the answer right above the point in the number you divide.
  2. 6 goes into 8 once: write 1 above the 8, then the point. 1 × 6 = 6, and 8 − 6 = 2 left over.
  3. Bring down the 4 to make 24. 24 ÷ 6 = 4: write 4 above the 4. So 8.4 ÷ 6 = 1.4.
  4. Check: 1.4 × 6 = 8.4.

Level 2: Hundredths, no extra zeros

  1. Divide as with whole numbers. Put the point in the answer right above the point in the number you divide.
  2. 4 does not go into 2, so use 25: 6 × 4 = 24. Write 6 above the 5, then the point. 25 − 24 = 1 left.
  3. Bring down the 3 to make 13. 3 × 4 = 12: write 3 above the 3. 13 − 12 = 1 left.
  4. Bring down the 6 to make 16: 16 ÷ 4 = 4, so 25.36 ÷ 4 = 6.34. Check: 6.34 × 4 = 25.36.

Level 3: Write zeros to finish

  1. Divide as with whole numbers. Put the point in the answer right above the point in the number you divide.
  2. 4 does not go into 3: write 0, then the point. Bring down the 4 to make 34.
  3. 8 × 4 = 32: write 8 above the 4. 34 − 32 = 2 left, and the digits have run out.
  4. 3.4 = 3.40, so bring down a 0 to make 20: 20 ÷ 4 = 5. Write 5 after the 8. So 3.4 ÷ 4 = 0.85.
