Grade 7, Fractions, decimals and percents

Divide fractions

Divide a whole number by a unit fraction, a fraction by a whole number, then a fraction by a fraction.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: A whole number by a unit fraction
Divide. Write the answer as a whole number.
Level 2: A fraction by a whole number
Divide. Write the answer in lowest terms.
Level 3: Fraction by fraction
Divide. Write the answer in lowest terms; use a mixed number when it is more than 1.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: A whole number by a unit fraction

3 ÷ 1/4 = 12

  1. To divide by a fraction, multiply by the fraction turned upside down.
  2. Turn 1/4 upside down to get 4/1 = 4. So 3 ÷ 1/4 = 3 × 4 = 12.
  3. Check by counting: 4 quarters make 1 whole, so 3 wholes make 3 × 4 = 12 quarters.

Level 2: A fraction by a whole number

4/5 ÷ 2 = 2/5

  1. To divide by a whole number, write it over 1 and turn it upside down: 2 = 2/1, so multiply by 1/2.
  2. Dividing by 2 is multiplying by 1/2, so 4/5 ÷ 2 = 4/5 × 1/2.
  3. Multiply the top numbers, then the bottom numbers: 4 × 1 = 4 and 5 × 2 = 10, so 4/5 × 1/2 = 4/10.
  4. Write it in lowest terms: 4/10 = 2/5.

Level 3: Fraction by fraction

5/6 ÷ 2/3 = 1 1/4

  1. To divide by a fraction, multiply by the fraction turned upside down.
  2. Turn 2/3 upside down to get 3/2, so 5/6 ÷ 2/3 = 5/6 × 3/2.
  3. Multiply the top numbers, then the bottom numbers: 5 × 3 = 15 and 6 × 2 = 12, so 5/6 × 3/2 = 15/12.
  4. Write it in lowest terms, then as a mixed number when it is more than 1: 15/12 = 5/4 = 1 1/4.
