Grade 7, Fractions, decimals and percents

Multiply fractions

Find a fraction of a whole number, multiply fraction by fraction, then multiply with mixed numbers.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: A fraction of a whole number
Multiply. Write the answer in lowest terms; use a mixed number when it is more than 1.
Level 2: Fraction by fraction
Multiply. Write the answer in lowest terms.
Level 3: With mixed numbers
Multiply. Write the answer in lowest terms; use a mixed number when it is more than 1.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: A fraction of a whole number

3/4 × 6 = 4 1/2

  1. 3/4 of 6 means 3/4 × 6.
  2. Multiply the top number by the whole number and keep the bottom: 3 × 6 = 18, so 3/4 × 6 = 18/4.
  3. Write it in lowest terms, then as a mixed number when it is more than 1: 18/4 = 9/2 = 4 1/2.

Level 2: Fraction by fraction

5/6 × 4/5 = 2/3

  1. Multiply the top numbers, then the bottom numbers: 5 × 4 = 20 and 6 × 5 = 30, so 5/6 × 4/5 = 20/30.
  2. Write it in lowest terms. The biggest number that divides both 20 and 30 is 10: 20/30 = 2/3.
  3. If no whole number more than 1 divides both the top and the bottom, it is already in lowest terms.

Level 3: With mixed numbers

2 1/4 × 2/3 = 1 1/2

  1. Improper fraction first: whole number times bottom, plus top. 2 × 4 + 1 = 9, so 2 1/4 = 9/4.
  2. Multiply the tops, then the bottoms: 9 × 2 = 18 and 4 × 3 = 12, so 9/4 × 2/3 = 18/12.
  3. Write it in lowest terms, then as a mixed number when it is more than 1: 18/12 = 3/2 = 1 1/2.
