While a child sleeps, four cards show the jobs sleep helps the body do: grow, repair, remember and fight germs. An hours line shows that most children need about 9 to 11 hours a night, and compares waking up rested after 10 hours with feeling tired and grumpy after only 6.

What the lesson says

Why does your body need sleep?

While you sleep, your body is busy doing important jobs.

Sleep helps your body grow.

It helps your body repair itself after a busy day.

It helps your brain remember what you learned today.

And it helps your body fight germs.

Most children your age need about 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night.

After 10 hours of sleep, you wake up rested.

But what if you sleep only 6 hours?

Then your body has less time for these jobs.

The next day, you may feel tired and grumpy.

Sleep helps you grow, repair, remember and fight germs.
