Starting at 680, we jump forward by 10s on a number line (680, 690, 700, 710) while a place value chart shows the tens digit going up, and 9 tens and 1 more ten making 1 new hundred at 700. Then we count back by 10s from 710 to 680, swapping 1 hundred for 10 tens to step back across 700, and checking every jump with its sum.

Transcript

What the lesson says

Let's skip-count by 10s, starting at 680.

680 is 6 hundreds, 8 tens and 0 ones.

Each jump forward adds 10, so 680 plus 10 is 690.

The tens digit goes up by 1, from 8 to 9.

Now, what is 690 plus 10?

9 tens and 1 more ten make 10 tens, which is 1 hundred.

So 690 plus 10 is 700.

One more jump forward: 700 plus 10 is 710.

Counting forward by 10s: 680, 690, 700, 710.

Now count back by 10s: 710 minus 10 is 700.

To take 10 from 700, swap 1 hundred for 10 tens.

Take 1 ten away to leave 9 tens, so 700 minus 10 is 690.

One more jump back: 690 minus 10 is 680.

Counting back by 10s: 710, 700, 690, 680.

Each jump forward adds 10, and each jump back takes away 10.
