The digits of 342 move into a hundreds, tens and ones chart, and base ten blocks show that the 3 is worth 300, the 4 is worth 4 tens or 40, and the 2 is worth 2; counting by hundreds and by tens checks the values, and 300 + 40 + 2 = 342 puts the number back together. Then in 408 the same 4 is worth 400, the 0 in the tens place shows there are no tens, and 400 + 0 + 8 = 408, ending on the recap that a digit's place tells you what it is worth.

What the lesson says

What is each digit in 342 worth?

Each digit in 342 has its own place: hundreds, tens or ones.

The 3 is in the hundreds place, so it is worth 3 hundreds, or 300.

Count by hundreds: 100, 200, 300.

The 4 is in the tens place, so it is worth 4 tens, or 40.

Count by tens: 10, 20, 30, 40.

The 2 is in the ones place, so it is worth 2 ones, or 2.

Put them together: 300 plus 40 plus 2 is 342.

Now look at 408.

This time the 4 is in the hundreds place, so it is worth 4 hundreds, or 400.

The 0 is in the tens place, so there are no tens.

The 8 is in the ones place, so it is worth 8 ones, or 8.

Put them together: 400 plus 0 plus 8 is 408.

A digit's place tells you what it is worth.
