The video works out −8 + 3 × (2 − 6) one line at a time. A panel beside the working shows the order to follow: brackets first, then multiplying and dividing, then adding and subtracting. It finds 2 − 6 = −4, then 3 × (−4) = −12, then −8 + (−12) = −20, pointing out that multiplying comes before adding even though the plus sign comes first, and ends on a one-line recap of the order.

What the lesson says

What is negative 8 plus 3 times, in brackets, 2 minus 6?

When there is more than one operation, we follow a set order.

First, work out what is inside the brackets.

Next, multiply and divide, from left to right.

Last, add and subtract, from left to right.

Start with the brackets, where 2 minus 6 is negative 4.

The plus sign comes first, but multiplying comes before adding.

So next, 3 times negative 4 is negative 12.

Last, negative 8 plus negative 12 is negative 20.

So negative 8 plus 3 times, in brackets, 2 minus 6, equals negative 20.

Remember: brackets first, then multiply and divide, then add and subtract.
