Multiplying with an area model: 23 × 14
- Grade 5
- Mathematics
- 1 min
- British Columbia
- BC5-MA-13
A rectangle 23 long and 14 wide, drawn to scale, is split into 20 and 3 along the top and 10 and 4 down the side, which cuts it into four parts. Each part is multiplied (200, 30, 80 and 12), and the parts are added to show that 23 × 14 = 322, ending on the recap "split, multiply each part, then add".

What the lesson says
What is 23 times 14?
Draw a rectangle that is 23 long and 14 wide.
Its area is 23 times 14.
Split 23 into 20 and 3.
Split 14 into 10 and 4.
Now find the area of each of the four parts.
20 times 10 is 200.
3 times 10 is 30.
20 times 4 is 80.
3 times 4 is 12.
Now add the four parts together.
200 plus 30 plus 80 plus 12 is 322.
So 23 times 14 is 322.
Split the numbers, multiply each part, then add.
