29 counters are put into groups of 4, and counting by fours shows 7 full groups with 1 counter left over, too few for another group. That left-over counter is the remainder, so 29 ÷ 4 = 7 R 1, checked by 7 × 4 = 28 and 28 + 1 = 29.

What the lesson says

What is 29 divided by 4?

Here are 29 counters.

Let us put them into groups of 4.

Count by fours: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28.

That makes 7 groups of 4.

1 counter is left over.

1 is less than 4, so it cannot make another group.

So 29 divided by 4 is 7, remainder 1.

R means remainder, the part left over.

Check: 7 times 4 is 28.

Add the 1 left over: 28 plus 1 is 29.

That is all 29 counters, so our answer is right.

Make equal groups, and the part left over is the remainder.
