96 is shown as base-ten blocks and broken into 80 and 16, two parts that 4 divides evenly; the 8 tens and then the 16 ones are shared into 4 equal groups, giving 80 ÷ 4 = 20 and 16 ÷ 4 = 4. Adding the two answers gives 96 ÷ 4 = 24, which is checked with 4 × 24 = 96 before a one-line recap: break it apart, divide each part, add the answers.

What the lesson says
What is 96 divided by 4?
We can think of it as sharing 96 into 4 equal groups.
Break 96 into two parts that are easy to divide by 4.
8 tens make 80.
The 1 ten and 6 ones left make 16.
So 96 is 80 plus 16.
Share out the 8 tens, and each group gets 2 tens.
So 80 divided by 4 is 20.
To share the 16, trade the ten for 10 ones.
Share out the 16 ones, and each group gets 4.
So 16 divided by 4 is 4.
Each group has 20 plus 4, which is 24.
So 96 divided by 4 is 24.
Check: 4 times 24 is 96, the number we started with.
To divide this way, break the number into easy parts, divide each part, and add the answers.
