Children build 46, 39 and 43 from towers of ten and loose cubes, then compare the tens first: 39 has the fewest tens, so it is the smallest, even though its 9 ones look like a lot. 46 and 43 both have 4 tens, so the ones decide, and the numbers move into order: 39, 43, 46.

Transcript

What the lesson says

Let's put 46, 39 and 43 in order.

Each tower has ten cubes, so it is one ten.

46 is 4 tens and 6 ones.

39 is 3 tens and 9 ones.

43 is 4 tens and 3 ones.

First, look at the tens in each number.

39 has only 3 tens, so it is the smallest.

Even 9 ones are less than one ten.

46 and 43 both have 4 tens.

So now we look at the ones.

3 ones is less than 6 ones.

So 43 is less than 46.

From smallest to biggest: 39, 43, 46.

Compare the tens first, then the ones.
