To work out 3 + (−5), we start at 3 on a number line, and because we are adding a negative we take 5 steps to the left, going past zero to land on −2. The video ends with the rule: start at the first number, then move right to add a positive and left to add a negative.

What the lesson says

What is 3 plus negative 5?

We can work it out on a number line.

Start at the first number, which is 3.

Adding a positive number moves you to the right.

Adding a negative number moves you to the left.

We are adding negative 5, so we move to the left.

Take 5 steps to the left, one at a time.

After 3 steps we reach zero, so we keep going.

After 5 steps, we land on negative 2.

So 3 plus negative 5 equals negative 2.

Start at the first number, then move right for a positive and left for a negative.
