The video adds 3486 + 2357 one column at a time, starting with the ones. Base ten blocks show 13 ones regrouped as 1 ten and 14 tens regrouped as 1 hundred, each new block becoming the carried 1, while the hundreds (8, less than 10) need no regrouping. It reaches 5843, checks it by rounding to the nearest hundred (3500 + 2400 = 5900, which is close) and ends on the recap that 10 or more in a place regroups as 1 in the next place.

What the lesson says

What is 3486 plus 2357?

Line up the thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.

Start with the ones: 6 plus 7 is 13.

13 ones make 1 ten and 3 ones, so write 3 and carry 1 ten.

Now the tens: 1 plus 8 plus 5 is 14 tens.

14 tens make 1 hundred and 4 tens, so write 4 and carry 1 hundred.

Next, the hundreds: 1 plus 4 plus 3 is 8 hundreds.

8 is less than 10, so just write 8.

Last, the thousands: 3 plus 2 is 5 thousands.

So 3486 plus 2357 equals 5843.

To check, round each number to the nearest hundred.

3500 plus 2400 is 5900, which is close to 5843.

When a place adds up to 10 or more, regroup 10 of them as 1 in the next place.
