- Grade 4

The sentence "Red balloons rise slowly." starts in plain white, and the video finds the job of each word in turn: the noun names a thing, the verb shows an action, the adjective tells what colour the balloons are and the adverb tells how they rise. Each word ends up coloured and labelled, with arrows from the describing words to the words they describe, and the video ends on the idea that a word's job tells its part of speech.

What the lesson says
What job does each word in a sentence do?
Here is a sentence: red balloons rise slowly.
The job a word does is called its part of speech.
Four common ones are noun, verb, adjective and adverb.
A noun names a person, a place, a thing or an idea.
Balloons names things, so it is a noun.
Many verbs show an action.
Rise tells what the balloons do, so it is a verb.
An adjective usually describes a noun.
Red tells what colour the balloons are, so it is an adjective.
An adverb often describes a verb.
Slowly tells how the balloons rise, so it is an adverb.
So our sentence has an adjective, a noun, a verb and an adverb.
The job a word does tells you its part of speech.
