What the lesson says

How does a verb show when something happens?

Here is a sentence: Mia plants a seed.

The verb is plants, the action word.

Think of time as a line with the past, the present and the future.

The tense of a verb shows when the action happens.

Now, in the present, Mia plants a seed.

Before now, in the past, Mia planted a seed.

Many verbs add the letters e and d for the past, so plant becomes planted.

Later, in the future, Mia will plant a seed.

One common way to show the future is to put will before the verb.

Planted, plants and will plant show the same action at three different times.

A verb's tense shows when the action happens: in the past, the present or the future.
