A short note about a rainy day is rewritten with contractions, and big letters show "do not" and "we are" being pushed together, losing one letter and taking an apostrophe in its place. The before and after notes mean the same thing, and the video ends on the recap that an apostrophe takes the place of missing letters.

What the lesson says

Here is a short note about a rainy day.

Can we turn do not into one short word?

First, push the two words together.

Next, leave out the o from not.

An apostrophe takes the place of the missing o.

So do not becomes don't.

A short word made like this is called a contraction.

Let's use don't in our note.

Now let's try the words we are.

Push them together and leave out the letter a.

An apostrophe takes the place of the missing a.

So we are becomes we're.

Both notes mean the same thing, but the new one is shorter.

In a contraction, an apostrophe takes the place of the missing letters.
