Grade 6, Fractions, decimals and percents
Percent of a number
Find a percent of a number, then use it for discounts and missing parts.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: 10%, 25%, 50% and 75%
- Find the percent of each number.
- Level 2: Any multiple of 5%
- Find the percent of each number.
- Level 3: Discounts and missing parts
- Find the sale price, the saving or the missing number. For a missing number, think of the percent as a fraction.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: 10%, 25%, 50% and 75%
75% of 48 = 36
- 50% is one half, 10% is one tenth and 25% is one quarter. One quarter of 48: 48 ÷ 4 = 12.
- 75% is three quarters: 3 × 12 = 36.
- So 75% of 48 is 36.
Level 2: Any multiple of 5%
35% of 80 = 28
- 10% is one tenth: 80 ÷ 10 = 8.
- 5% is half of 10%: 8 ÷ 2 = 4.
- 35% = 10% + 10% + 10% + 5%, so add 8 + 8 + 8 + 4 = 28.
- Or write 35% as 0.35. Of means times: 0.35 × 80 = 28.
Level 3: Discounts and missing parts
Price $70. Discount 30%. Sale price $49
- 10% of 70 is 7, so 30% is 3 × 7 = 21. You save $21.
- Sale price: $70 − $21 = $49.
- A missing percent: 12 out of 60 is 12/60 = 1/5 = 20/100, so it is 20%.
- A missing whole: 75% of it is 45, so one quarter is 45 ÷ 3 = 15. The whole is 4 × 15 = 60.
