Grade 6, Fractions, decimals and percents
Equivalent ratios
Write ratios from counts, find the missing term in equivalent ratios, and write ratios in simplest form.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Write ratios and scale up
- Write each ratio. Then write the missing number to make equivalent ratios.
- Level 2: Missing term anywhere
- Write the missing number to make equivalent ratios.
- Level 3: Simplest form
- Write each ratio in simplest form.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Write ratios and scale up
2 : 5 = 6 : 15
- To write a ratio, keep the order of the words: 3 red and 5 blue is red to blue = 3 : 5.
- For red to all, add the parts first: 3 + 5 = 8, so red to all = 3 : 8.
- To scale up, see what a term was multiplied by. 2 became 6: 2 × 3 = 6.
- Multiply the other term by 3 too: 5 × 3 = 15, so 2 : 5 = 6 : 15.
Level 2: Missing term anywhere
8 : 12 = 2 : 3
- 12 became 3: 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Divide both terms by 4.
- 8 ÷ 4 = 2, so 8 : 12 = 2 : 3.
Level 3: Simplest form
12 : 18 = 2 : 3
- The greatest common factor of 12 and 18 is 6.
- Divide both terms by 6: 12 ÷ 6 = 2 and 18 ÷ 6 = 3.
- So 12 : 18 = 2 : 3 in simplest form.
