Grade 6, Fractions, decimals and percents
Divide decimals
Divide a decimal by a whole number from 2 to 9, with answers that end by the thousandths.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Tenths by a 1-digit number
- Divide.
- Level 2: Hundredths by a 1-digit number
- Divide.
- Level 3: Thousandths, and extra zeros to keep dividing
- Divide. When you need more digits, write zeros at the end of the decimal you are dividing.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Tenths by a 1-digit number
8.4 ÷ 6 = 1.4
- 6 goes into 8 once, with 2 left over. Write 1, then the point right above the one in 8.4.
- Bring down the 4 to make 24: 24 ÷ 6 = 4, so 8.4 ÷ 6 = 1.4.
- Check: 1.4 × 6 = 8.4.
- In 4.8 ÷ 6, 6 does not go into 4: write 0 and the point. Then 48 ÷ 6 = 8, so 4.8 ÷ 6 = 0.8.
Level 2: Hundredths by a 1-digit number
7.56 ÷ 3 = 2.52
- 3 goes into 7 twice, with 1 left over. Write 2, then the point right above the one in 7.56.
- Bring down the 5 to make 15: 15 ÷ 3 = 5. Bring down the 6: 6 ÷ 3 = 2.
- So 7.56 ÷ 3 = 2.52. Check: 2.52 × 3 = 7.56.
- In 2.48 ÷ 4, 4 does not go into 2: write 0 and the point. Then 24 ÷ 4 = 6 and 8 ÷ 4 = 2, so 2.48 ÷ 4 = 0.62.
Level 3: Thousandths, and extra zeros to keep dividing
1.8 ÷ 8 = 0.225
- 8 does not go into 1, so write 0. Put the point right above the one in 1.8.
- Bring down the 8 to make 18: 8 goes in 2 times, with 2 left over.
- 1.8 = 1.80, so bring down a 0 to make 20: 8 goes in 2 times, with 4 left over.
- 1.8 = 1.800, so bring down another 0 to make 40: 40 ÷ 8 = 5. So 1.8 ÷ 8 = 0.225.
