Grade 6, Fractions, decimals and percents
Multiply and divide decimals, mixed
A mixed review: multiply and divide decimals by whole numbers on the same sheet.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: Tenths
- Multiply or divide. Look at the sign first.
- Level 2: Hundredths
- Multiply or divide. Look at the sign first.
- Level 3: Thousandths
- Multiply or divide. Look at the sign first. When a division needs more digits, write zeros at the end of the decimal.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: Tenths
3.8 × 7 = 26.6
- Multiply as if there were no decimal point: 38 × 7 = 266.
- 3.8 has 1 decimal place, so put the point 1 place from the right: 26.6.
- Check by dividing: 26.6 ÷ 7 = 3.8.
- A zero at the end, after the point, can be dropped: 3.0 = 3.
Level 2: Hundredths
9.12 ÷ 4 = 2.28
- 4 goes into 9 twice, with 1 left over. Write 2, then the point right above the one in 9.12.
- Bring down the 1 to make 11: 4 goes in 2 times, with 3 left over.
- Bring down the 2 to make 32: 32 ÷ 4 = 8, so 9.12 ÷ 4 = 2.28. Check: 2.28 × 4 = 9.12.
- In 2.48 ÷ 4, 4 does not go into 2: write 0 and the point. Then 24 ÷ 4 = 6 and 8 ÷ 4 = 2, so 2.48 ÷ 4 = 0.62.
Level 3: Thousandths
1.207 × 6 = 7.242
- Multiply as if there were no decimal point: 1207 × 6 = 7242.
- 1.207 has 3 decimal places, so put the point 3 places from the right: 7.242. Check: 7.242 ÷ 6 = 1.207.
- A zero at the end, after the point, can be dropped: 5.340 = 5.34.
- A division such as 1.5 ÷ 4 needs more digits: write zeros at the end. 1.500 ÷ 4 = 0.375.
