Grade 6, Fractions, decimals and percents

Multiply decimals

Multiply a decimal by a whole number, from tenths to thousandths.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: Tenths by a 1-digit number
Multiply.
Level 2: Hundredths by a 1-digit number
Multiply.
Level 3: Thousandths, and 2-digit multipliers
Multiply.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: Tenths by a 1-digit number

4.7 × 6 = 28.2

  1. Multiply as if there were no decimal point: 47 × 6 = 282.
  2. 4.7 has 1 decimal place, so put the point 1 place from the right: 28.2.
  3. Estimate to check: 5 × 6 = 30, and 28.2 is close to 30.
  4. A zero at the end, after the point, can be dropped: 3.0 = 3.

Level 2: Hundredths by a 1-digit number

3.46 × 7 = 24.22

  1. Multiply as if there were no decimal point: 346 × 7 = 2422.
  2. 3.46 has 2 decimal places, so put the point 2 places from the right: 24.22.
  3. Estimate to check: 3.5 × 7 = 24.5, and 24.22 is close to 24.5.
  4. A zero at the end, after the point, can be dropped: 2.30 = 2.3.

Level 3: Thousandths, and 2-digit multipliers

2.936 × 8 = 23.488

  1. Multiply as if there were no decimal point: 2936 × 8 = 23 488.
  2. 2.936 has 3 decimal places, so put the point 3 places from the right: 23.488.
  3. A zero at the end, after the point, can be dropped: 5.340 = 5.34.
  4. With a 2-digit multiplier, multiply by the ones and the tens, then add: 45 × 16 = 45 × 6 + 45 × 10 = 720.
