Grade 7, Operations

Multiply integers

Multiply positive and negative numbers with the sign rules, two or three at a time.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: At most one negative number
Multiply.
Level 2: Any signs
Multiply.
Level 3: Three numbers
Multiply.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: At most one negative number

−6 × 7 = −42

  1. The signs are different, so the product is negative.
  2. −6 has size 6 (how far it is from 0). Multiply the sizes: 6 × 7 = 42, so −6 × 7 = −42.
  3. Two positive numbers have the same sign, so their product is positive: 6 × 7 = 42.

Level 2: Any signs

−8 × (−9) = 72

  1. The signs are the same, so the product is positive.
  2. −8 has size 8 (how far it is from 0). Multiply the sizes: 8 × 9 = 72, so −8 × (−9) = 72.
  3. Different signs give a negative product: 8 × (−9) = −72.

Level 3: Three numbers

−3 × 5 × (−4) = 60

  1. Multiply from left to right: −3 × 5 = −15. Different signs give a negative.
  2. Then −15 × (−4) = 60. Same signs give a positive.
