Grade 7, Operations
Multiply and divide integers, mixed
Review multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers, mixed on one sheet.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: At most one negative number
- Multiply or divide.
- Level 2: Any signs
- Multiply or divide.
- Level 3: Larger numbers
- Multiply or divide.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: At most one negative number
5 × (−8) = −40
- The signs are different, so the product is negative.
- −8 has size 8 (how far it is from 0). Multiply the sizes: 5 × 8 = 40, so 5 × (−8) = −40.
- Two positive numbers have the same sign, so the answer is positive: 5 × 8 = 40.
- The sign rules are the same when you divide: −40 ÷ 8 = −5.
Level 2: Any signs
−63 ÷ (−7) = 9
- The signs are the same, so the quotient is positive.
- −63 has size 63 (how far it is from 0). Divide the sizes: 63 ÷ 7 = 9, so −63 ÷ (−7) = 9.
- Check: 9 × (−7) = −63.
- Different signs give a negative answer when you multiply or divide: 63 ÷ (−7) = −9.
Level 3: Larger numbers
−96 ÷ (−6) = 16
- The signs are the same, so the quotient is positive.
- Split 96 into 60 + 36: 60 ÷ 6 = 10 and 36 ÷ 6 = 6.
- So 96 ÷ 6 = 10 + 6 = 16, and −96 ÷ (−6) = 16.
- To multiply, use parts too: 10 × 6 = 60 and 6 × 6 = 36. Different signs give a negative: 16 × (−6) = −96.
