Grade 7, Operations
Divide integers
Divide positive and negative numbers with the sign rules, and find a missing number.
Three levels
One skill, rising difficulty
Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.
- Level 1: At most one negative number
- Divide.
- Level 2: Any signs
- Divide.
- Level 3: Find the missing number
- Find the missing number.
Worked example
How the sheet explains it
The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.
Level 1: At most one negative number
−42 ÷ 6 = −7
- The signs are different, so the quotient is negative.
- −42 has size 42 (how far it is from 0). Divide the sizes: 42 ÷ 6 = 7, so −42 ÷ 6 = −7.
- Check: −7 × 6 = −42.
- Two positive numbers have the same sign, so their quotient is positive: 42 ÷ 6 = 7.
Level 2: Any signs
−72 ÷ (−8) = 9
- The signs are the same, so the quotient is positive.
- −72 has size 72 (how far it is from 0). Divide the sizes: 72 ÷ 8 = 9, so −72 ÷ (−8) = 9.
- Check: 9 × (−8) = −72.
- Different signs give a negative quotient: 72 ÷ (−8) = −9.
Level 3: Find the missing number
−54 ÷ −6 = 9
- −54 has size 54 (how far it is from 0). The divisor is missing, so divide the sizes: 54 ÷ 9 = 6.
- The quotient 9 is positive, so the signs are the same: the missing number is −6.
- Check: −54 ÷ (−6) = 9.
- If the first number is missing, multiply: ____ ÷ (−4) = 7 means 7 × (−4) = −28.
