Grade 7, Operations

Add integers

Add positive and negative numbers from −20 to 20 with the sign rules, two or three at a time.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: From −10 to 10
Add.
Level 2: From −20 to 20
Add.
Level 3: Three numbers
Add.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: From −10 to 10

−8 + 5 = −3

  1. The size of a number is how far it is from 0: −8 has size 8.
  2. The signs are different, so take the smaller size from the larger: 8 − 5 = 3.
  3. −8 has the larger size, so the answer is negative: −8 + 5 = −3.
  4. Same signs: add the sizes and keep the sign. 4 + 5 = 9, so −4 + (−5) = −9.

Level 2: From −20 to 20

13 + (−18) = −5

  1. The size of a number is how far it is from 0: −18 has size 18.
  2. The signs are different, so take the smaller size from the larger: 18 − 13 = 5.
  3. −18 has the larger size, so the answer is negative: 13 + (−18) = −5.
  4. Same signs: add the sizes and keep the sign. 11 + 4 = 15, so −11 + (−4) = −15.

Level 3: Three numbers

−6 + (−8) + 11 = −3

  1. The size of a number is how far it is from 0: −6 has size 6.
  2. Add from left to right. Same signs: add the sizes and keep the sign. −6 + (−8) = −14.
  3. Then −14 + 11. Different signs: take the smaller size from the larger, 14 − 11 = 3.
  4. −14 has the larger size, so the answer is negative: −6 + (−8) + 11 = −3.
