Grade 7, Operations

Add and subtract integers, mixed

Review adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers, mixed on one sheet.

Three levels

One skill, rising difficulty

Each sheet carries one level. The three are the same skill at rising difficulty, each named for what it practises.

Level 1: From −10 to 10
Add or subtract.
Level 2: From −20 to 20
Add or subtract.
Level 3: Three numbers
Add and subtract from left to right.

Worked example

How the sheet explains it

The helper printed at the top of each sheet: one solved example and the steps a student follows, before the first question. Every number sentence in it is proven by the same checker as the answer key.

Level 1: From −10 to 10

4 − 9 = −5

  1. To subtract, add the opposite: 4 − 9 = 4 + (−9).
  2. The signs are different, so take the smaller size (how far it is from 0) from the larger: 9 − 4 = 5.
  3. −9 has the larger size, so the answer is negative: 4 + (−9) = −5.
  4. Same signs: add the sizes and keep the sign. 2 + 5 = 7, so −2 + (−5) = −7.

Level 2: From −20 to 20

9 − (−4) = 13

  1. To subtract, add the opposite: 9 − (−4) = 9 + 4 = 13.
  2. Check on a number line: start at −4, the number taken away. It takes 13 steps right to reach 9.
  3. Same signs: add the sizes (how far each is from 0) and keep the sign. 12 + 5 = 17, so −12 + (−5) = −17.
  4. Different signs: take the smaller size from the larger, and keep the sign of the larger size. 6 + (−15) = −9.

Level 3: Three numbers

−3 + 8 − (−5) = 10

  1. Work from left to right. First: −3 + 8 = 5.
  2. Subtracting −5 is adding 5: 5 − (−5) = 5 + 5 = 10.
  3. Same signs: add the sizes (how far each is from 0) and keep the sign. 12 + 5 = 17, so −12 + (−5) = −17.
  4. Different signs: take the smaller size from the larger, and keep the sign of the larger size. 6 + (−15) = −9.
