A $40 meal bill is drawn as a bar split into ten $4 parts. That shows 10% of the bill is $4, half of that, 5%, is $2, and so a 15% tip is $4 + $2 = $6. The tip is added to the bill for a total of $46, and the video ends on the recap: find 10%, build the tip, add it on.

What the lesson says

The bill for your meal is 40 dollars.

You want to leave a 15 percent tip for the server.

How much is the tip, and how much do you pay in all?

Think of the whole bill, 40 dollars, as 100 percent.

First, find 10 percent by dividing the bill by 10.

40 dollars divided by 10 is 4 dollars.

5 percent is half of 10 percent, so it is 2 dollars.

15 percent is 10 percent plus 5 percent.

So the tip is 4 dollars plus 2 dollars, which is 6 dollars.

Now add the tip to the bill.

40 dollars plus 6 dollars is 46 dollars.

So you pay 46 dollars in all.

To work out a tip, find 10 percent of the bill, build the tip from it, and add it to the bill.
