A whole square is cut into 10 equal strips, and shading 3 of them shows that 3 tenths is written 3/10 or 0.3, with the first place after the point being the tenths place. The same square is then cut into 100 squares, and shading 45 of them (4 full strips plus 5 more) shows that 45 hundredths is 45/100 or 0.45, where the 4 means 4 tenths and the 5 means 5 hundredths.

What the lesson says

How can we write a part of this whole square as a number?

Cut the square into 10 equal strips, and each strip is one tenth.

Shade 3 strips, and that is 3 tenths.

3 out of 10 equal strips are shaded, so the fraction is 3 tenths.

As a decimal, 3 tenths is written 0.3.

The first place after the decimal point is the tenths place.

Now cut every strip into 10 small squares.

That makes 100 equal squares, and each one is one hundredth.

Shade 45 squares, and that is 45 hundredths.

4 full strips make 40, and 5 more squares make 45.

45 out of 100 equal squares are shaded, so the fraction is 45 hundredths.

As a decimal, 45 hundredths is written 0.45.

The 4 means 4 tenths, and the 5 means 5 hundredths.

So 3 tenths is 0.3, and 45 hundredths is 0.45.
