Seeing Five at a Glance: Dice and Finger Patterns
- Kindergarten

A five on a dice face flashes up too fast to count, and children learn to recognise it from its pattern: four dots in the corners and one in the middle, so 4 and 1 make 5. One whole hand then matches the five dots finger for finger, and 3 fingers on one hand and 2 on the other fill the same dice pattern, showing that 3 and 2 make 5 too.
