Base ten blocks show what each digit in 2345 is worth: 2 thousand cubes make 2000, 3 hundred flats make 300, 4 ten rods make 40 and 5 ones make 5. Each amount is checked by counting, and 2000 + 300 + 40 + 5 is shown to make 2345 again.

What the lesson says

What is each digit in 2345 worth?

Each digit in 2345 has its own place: thousands, hundreds, tens or ones.

One big cube is 10 hundreds stacked up, so it is worth 1000.

The 2 is in the thousands place, so it is worth 2 thousands, or 2000.

Count by thousands: 1000, 2000.

The 3 is in the hundreds place, so it is worth 3 hundreds, or 300.

Count by hundreds: 100, 200, 300.

The 4 is in the tens place, so it is worth 4 tens, or 40.

Count by tens: 10, 20, 30, 40.

The 5 is in the ones place, so it is worth 5 ones, or 5.

Put them together: 2000 plus 300 plus 40 plus 5 is 2345.

A digit's place tells you what it is worth.
