A $60 jacket is 30% off, and a bar split into ten 10% parts shows that the saving, 30% of $60, is 3 × $6 = $18. The video then gets the same answer the quicker way: write 30% as the decimal 0.3 and multiply by the price.

What the lesson says

A jacket costs 60 dollars, and it is 30 percent off.

How much money do you save?

So we need to find 30 percent of 60 dollars.

The whole price, 60 dollars, is 100 percent.

Split the bar into 10 equal parts. Each part is 10 percent.

60 divided by 10 is 6, so each part is worth 6 dollars.

30 percent is 3 of these parts.

3 times 6 dollars is 18 dollars.

There is a quicker way. Percent means out of 100, so 30 percent is 0.3.

Then multiply 0.3 by the price, 60 dollars.

0.3 times 60 is 18. It is the same answer.

So you save 18 dollars.

To find a percent of an amount, write the percent as a decimal and multiply by the amount.
