The video works through 8.5 − 0.5 × (1.3 + 0.9) one line at a time, beside a panel that shows the order to follow: brackets first (2.2), then multiply before subtracting (0.5 × 2.2 = 1.1, which is half of 2.2), then subtract last to get 7.4. It shows that decimals follow the same order of operations as whole numbers, and ends on the recap "brackets first, then multiply and divide, then add and subtract."

What the lesson says

What is 8.5 minus 0.5 times, in brackets, 1.3 plus 0.9?

Decimals follow the same order of operations as whole numbers.

First, work out what is inside the brackets.

Next, multiply and divide, from left to right.

Last, add and subtract, from left to right.

Start with the brackets, where 1.3 plus 0.9 is 2.2.

The minus sign comes first, but multiplying comes before subtracting.

So next, multiply 0.5 by 2.2.

Times 0.5 is the same as half, and half of 2.2 is 1.1.

Last, subtract. 8.5 minus 1.1 is 7.4.

So 8.5 minus 0.5 times, in brackets, 1.3 plus 0.9, equals 7.4.

Remember: brackets first, then multiply and divide, then add and subtract.
