An array of 3 rows of 4 counters is counted by 4s to show 3 × 4 = 12, then piled up and shared back into 3 equal rows to show 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Since the same array and the same three numbers make both facts, children see that multiplying and dividing are related.

What the lesson says

How are multiplying and dividing related?

Counters in equal rows make an array.

This array has 3 rows of 4 counters.

Count them by 4s: 4, 8, 12.

So 3 times 4 equals 12.

Now put all 12 counters in one pile.

Share them out into 3 equal rows, one at a time.

How many counters are in each row?

There are 4 in each row.

So 12 divided by 3 equals 4.

Both facts come from the same array.

They use the same three numbers: 3, 4 and 12.

One array, two facts: 3 times 4 is 12, and 12 divided by 3 is 4.
