A balance scale shows 3x + 2 = 14, and taking 2 blocks off one side tips it until 2 come off the other side too. Splitting both sides into three equal groups shows that one x box balances 4 blocks, so x = 4. The video checks the answer and ends on "Do the same to both sides to keep it balanced."

What the lesson says

How do we solve 3x plus 2 equals 14?

An equation is like a balance, with equal amounts on both sides.

The left side holds three x boxes and two blocks.

The right side holds fourteen blocks.

We want to find how many blocks one x box is worth.

First, take the two blocks off the left side.

Now the sides are not equal, so the scale tips.

Take two blocks off the right side too, and the scale is level again.

Now three x boxes balance twelve blocks, so 3x equals 12.

Next, split each side into three equal groups.

Each x box matches a group of four blocks.

Keep one group on each side, and one x box balances four blocks.

So x equals 4.

Check it: 3 times 4 plus 2 is 14, the same as the right side.

Whatever you do to one side of an equation, do the same to the other side.
